Why Our Work Matters

Childhood trauma can cause a multitude of short-term and long-term problems for those who have experienced it. According to SAMHSAS’s National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative, more than two-thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by the age of 16 and more than 12%  of children have experienced four or more trauma events by the time they reach adulthood, significantly affecting their physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development.

At Chester Street Foundation, we know education is a critical component to helping traumatized children on their road to recovery.
